Do you still remember renting videos before the days of streaming? Blockbuster was probably the most well known of the video rental stores around. Founded in 1985, as a single store, it quickly evolved into a chain that spread all across the country. However, it wasn’t until 1996 that they started their first website.
The site has been restored to their earliest functional version in late 1996. Within the site, you will find sections for movies, games, books, news, music, and accessories.
In the video section, you will find information about new and upcoming releases and special events
In the music section, you will find similar information about music. There is also a section dedicated to the upcoming Rock Fest 97.
Video games were becoming even more popular as systems became more capable. Blockbuster also rented out games and systems.
Something Blockbuster was not as well known for is covering books. But they also had a small section dedicated to books.
There is a lot more to be found in each section. The site was well preserved and gives an insight into early web design. This wasn’t just a website, it was a digital storefront for an entire weekend ritual. Piling into the family car on a Friday night, arguing over which new release wouldn’t be out of stock, and hoping the last copy of your favorite video game hadn’t already been snatched.
