MetaFilter has been restored on Protoweb, capturing the site at a time when it was first gaining traction and establishing itself as one of the web’s earliest community-driven platforms.
Â
For those unfamiliar, MetaFilter functioned similarly to a modern site like Reddit. Users would post interesting links, articles, and discoveries from around the web, discuss current events, while others would join in through comment discussions. It became a central hub for finding unusual, thought-provoking, and sometimes obscure content during the early days of the internet.
Â
This restoration recreates MetaFilter’s original layout and includes posts, comments, and user profiles, preserving the feel of the site as it existed during its formative years.
Â
One unique feature of this restoration is that the front page plays back posts in real time. The site begins in the year 2000 and progresses forward day by day through the early 2000s, continuing through the end of 2006 before looping back to the beginning. If you visit the front page throughout the day (or return the next day) you’ll see new posts appear as they originally did.
This creates a kind of living feed of early internet history, allowing you to follow MetaFilter as if you were there when it was happening.
If you prefer to browse freely, you can also visit the archive and jump to any specific date between 1999 and 2006.
Â
Many posts include links to external websites that MetaFilter users were sharing at the time. These links are routed through Protoweb’s Wayback Machine proxy, allowing you to view archived versions of those pages.
Not every link has survived, but in many cases, especially for simpler sites or text-based content, there is still an accessible archived version available.
Â
Â
The restoration also includes a Customize page, where you can:
Â
-
Change visual themes
-
Adjust text size preferences
-
Set the current year displayed on the front page
Â
This allows you to either follow the timeline naturally or explore a specific period of MetaFilter’s early history.
Â
Â
MetaFilter offers a window into how people discovered and discussed the internet before modern social media. Through this restoration, you can experience that process as it unfolded, one post at a time.
