Slashdot has been added to Protoweb! This restoration is based on early captures of the site from around 2000, showcasing Slashdot during its rise as one of the web’s most influential tech news and discussion communities.
Originally launched in 1997 with the tagline “News for Nerds. Stuff That Matters,” Slashdot became a central hub for technology, science, and internet culture news, a role which it continues to serve to this day. Stories were curated and posted to the front page, where users could dive into extensive comment threads, often just as important as the articles themselves. Discussions frequently covered software, hardware, open source, culture and emerging trends in the tech world.
This restoration operates as a live site, pulling in modern articles via Slashdot’s RSS feeds while preserving the look and feel of its early-2000s design. An archive page is also included, allowing you to search for articles by keyword across Slashdot’s history and sort results by newest or oldest.
The site includes the following features:
-
Create user accounts
-
Participate in and vote on polls
-
Read and browse modern Slashdot articles via RSS feeds
-
View comment threads
-
Search and browse stories from across decades of history
These features recreate both the appearance and functionality of Slashdot, offering a new (old) way to experience one of the Internet’s most iconic communities.
